I admit I have been negligent.
I asked what vaccines he needed. There were two. I have already forgotten one of them. The other one stuck in my mind. I knew before that this existed. But, it brings up a real question.
Why do they have a vaccine for Feline Leukemia and not one for human leukemia?

Something I am learning about CML
Chronic myelogenous leukemia has 3 phases.
As the amount of blast cells increases in the blood and bone marrow, there is less room for healthy white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets. This may result in infections, anemia, and easy bleeding, as well as bone pain and pain or a feeling of fullness below the ribs on the left side. The number of blast cells in the blood and bone marrow and the severity of symptoms determine the phase of the disease.
Chronic phase
In chronic phase CML, fewer than 10% of the cells in the blood and bone marrow are blast cells.
Accelerated phase
In accelerated phase CML, 10% to 19% of the cells in the blood and bone marrow are blast cells.
Blastic phase
In blastic phase CML, 20% or more of the cells in the blood or bone marrow are blast cells. When tiredness, fever, and an enlarged spleen occur during the blastic phase, it is called blast crisis.

I wonder why too! Glad your learning about the type of Leukemia you have. My dad didn't have Leukemia, but they didn't really have a name for the type of cancer he had, they gave him a name and then told him that what he had didn't really fit the description of what he had...I can't remember the name of it was anymore. It was in his spine though and caused him to go completely numb in his feet. The numbness eventually traveled up to his chest, which is what made my mom take him to the emergency room. With treatment he gained all the feeling back in his body except the bottoms of his feet. He was in remission for a month and then when he went to Arizona to have bone marrow taken out for the next time he might have cancer, he got sick again. They found the cancer in the liver and then it spread like wild fire.

I'm sorry about your Dad. I am learning there are many forms and sub forms of Leukemia. I wonder what meds your Dad was given. Or did this happen so fast that he didn't have a chance for treatment?

ReplyDeleteMy dad was diagnosed in October of 2003. He went into remission in March of 2004 and then a month later was told the cancer was back...and passed away two weeks later. The first time around I think he was on radiation treatments. He was on blood thinners, pain killers, anti nausea meds, the marijuana pill and several others meds.
The second time around the doctor had a meeting with the family to tell us that what he had had done before was all he could do. He said he could put dad back on the radiation treatments, but it would only take him faster...so he didn't do the treatments, but he passed away faster than he should have. When he was put in the nursing home, they trippled the meds he was on and we think that, in addition to the cancer is what killed him. Of course we found out later that they over dosed him. They had him on 3x times the blood, thinners, morphine, and a few others.
OMG Melanie! I'm so sorry your father had to go through that. And your family, too. My own father, when he had his stroke inside the nursing home they didn't bother to do anything. My mother had to struggle to get to a phone and figure out how to call one of us (she was blind and barely walked) in order to get help. My daughter called 911. The nursing home was surprised they showed up. He died at the hospital and then came back. He lasted another miserable 5 months in the nursing home flat on his back. I dread my old age. Well, now I guess I don't have to worry about that!
ReplyDeleteMy dad seemed to know that his time was near when we had that meeting with the doctor. He had said everything he needed to say and was at peace with everything. I don't know how he knew it, but he did.
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear about your dad too, that is a horrible way to live. I don't know why those kind of places are so unhelpful...when they are supposed to be there to help.
Do you know when your going to start treatments? I hope you do have to worry about your old age and that you will enjoy it...just don't go into a nursing home!
I talked to my mom this morning. My step dad has been in the hospital for a little over a week now. He had surgery last Wednesday to take some pressure off of a nerve in his back. Thursday they had to open him up again because he had a blood clot. He was supposed to be in the hospital until Wednesday and instead they rushed him out an put him in a nursing home. He was taken into the Emergency room on Wednesday because he was having severe abdominal pain. I can't remember what else she told me, but she was not happy with the rehab/nursing home, because they were doing him pretty much like they did my dad.
He is at a different hospital under constant supervision by hospital staff. They have him under supervision because he is disoriented and tried to stand up on his own and fell. Lucky for him he only scraped his elbow. He is doing ok now and He is supposed to start physical therapy on Monday.
Oh, no! I'm sorry to learn that. Didn't they just get married not too long ago? I hope he recovers soon!
